Important booking tip · Our recommendation
Book early — train tickets can be hard to get
Seats on popular services can sell out quickly, especially around holidays. Start checking roughly 10 days before your departure date and be ready when your travel date opens for sale. Check the current release date and time in the official service; holiday arrangements may differ.
Use the official Rail Sheba app or Bangladesh Railway’s e-ticket website. Bangladeshi adults normally register using their National ID (NID) details. Foreign visitors can register using a passport; other eligible passengers may use birth-registration documents under the applicable rules.
Prepare your account and complete identity verification before tickets go on sale. Keep your dates and preferred train ready, and do not leave booking until you arrive at the station.

Find the right place
Where is Sylhet Railway Station?
The station is on the south bank of the Surma, in the Kadamtali area. Bangladesh’s Sylhet district administration describes its location as Khojar Khola, south of the river. You may see the area written as Kadamtali, Kodomtoli or Kodomttoli.
For a driver or map search, use “Sylhet Railway Station” or the Bengali name “সিলেট রেলওয়ে স্টেশন”. Avoid using only “Sylhet station” if there is any doubt about whether you mean a bus terminal or railway station.
The Surma riverside, Keane Bridge and Ali Amjad’s Clock are in this part of the city, but leave sightseeing for after you have dealt with luggage and onward transport.

Dhaka to Sylhet train: choosing a service
Compare the arrival time with your hotel’s check-in arrangements. A daytime journey avoids a very early arrival; an overnight trip can save daytime travel hours but may leave you needing an early-morning pickup and somewhere to rest.
Allow a margin for delays. If you are connecting to a flight, a wedding or another fixed appointment, a timetable arrival should not be the only buffer in your plan.
Book through official channels
Sylhet train tickets and ticket prices
The most useful fare is the one quoted for your route, date, train and class. Check it on Bangladesh Railway’s official e-ticket website. A fare copied from an old chart may exclude charges or refer to a different class.
How to book online
- Open the official website or Rail Sheba, published by Bangladesh Railway, and sign in or follow its registration instructions.
- Search your departure station, destination and intended travel date. For the return journey, reverse the stations and choose the return departure date.
- Compare available trains and classes, then choose a seat where offered.
- Check passenger details, boarding station, total cost and the current cancellation terms before payment.
- Complete payment and download the issued e-ticket. Keep it available offline and follow the ticket’s identity and boarding instructions.
Rail Sheba’s official listing confirms online train searches, seat selection, payment and downloadable e-tickets. Complete any required passenger verification through the official service.
Which seat or class should you choose?
Look at the description offered for the actual train. For a daytime trip, compare seat comfort, air conditioning and cost. For an overnight trip, confirm whether you are booking a seated place or a berth; “AC” alone does not tell you that. Families should check seat positions before paying.

Arriving at Sylhet Railway Station
Station to your hotel
Keep your hotel’s full address and phone number ready. Agree the destination and fare before taking a CNG or other local vehicle. With luggage, children or an early arrival, arranging pickup in advance can make the journey easier.
Station to Osmani Airport
The railway station and Osmani International Airport are separate locations requiring a road transfer. Ask for a journey estimate for your travel time and allow for traffic, train delays and airline check-in deadlines.
A tight train-to-flight connection leaves little room for disruption.
Continuing to Sreemangal or a day-trip destination
If Sreemangal is your main destination, check whether your chosen train stops there before booking through to Sylhet. For Jaflong, Lalakhal or Bholaganj, plan onward road transport and any boat arrangements separately.
Our Sylhet travel guide helps you choose an itinerary, while the Bholaganj Sada Pathor guide explains that particular day trip.
Before boarding: a useful station checklist
- Arrive with a margin: as a practical starting point, aim for 30–45 minutes before departure, with more time if you need counter assistance. This is planning advice, not an official boarding rule.
- Find your train and coach: check station displays, announcements or staff rather than assuming a platform from an old journey.
- Prepare tickets and ID: follow the requirements printed on your issued ticket and keep essential documents accessible.
- Keep essentials with you: drinking water, medication, a charged phone and a power bank are useful on a long trip.
- Ask about assistance early: confirm step-free access, boarding help, waiting areas or luggage arrangements if these affect your journey.
- Agree porter charges first: if you use luggage assistance, settle the price and stay with your belongings.
Counter hours, specific waiting-room access, luggage storage and assistance availability should be checked with station staff. We have not verified these as round-the-clock services.
