GREATER SYLHET · DISTRICT GUIDE
Open water, changing seasons and the sound of folk music
Sunamganj district is a place where water shapes the landscape and daily life. In the rainy season, broad haor basins become immense stretches of open water; in the drier months, fields, channels and village paths emerge again. The district lies in northwestern Sylhet Division, with Sunamganj town as its headquarters. Its natural scenery and musical heritage make it a distinct part of Greater Sylhet.
Sunamganj district at a glance
*Population is the district-wide count in the BBS Population and Housing Census 2022 preliminary report, not a current estimate or town population. Later reports may revise figures. Area figures follow the district government profile; published administrative and statistical areas can differ.
Sunamganj is one of Sylhet Division’s four districts and has 12 upazilas. The town is an important starting point for some journeys, but it is not the same as the haor destinations themselves. Trips towards Tahirpur, Dirai or other rural areas need onward planning. Allow time for changing road and water routes rather than judging travel solely by the distance on a map.
Upazilas of Sunamganj
Sunamganj Sadar, Shantiganj, Jagannathpur, Chhatak, Dowarabazar, Bishwambharpur, Tahirpur, Dharmapasha, Jamalganj, Dirai, Shalla and Madhyanagar.
Where is Sunamganj? Geography and map
The Surma floodplain, extensive wetlands and the hills of Meghalaya across the northern border define much of Sunamganj’s setting. Tanguar Haor is a Wetland of International Importance under the Ramsar Convention. This is a working landscape as well as a visitor destination: rice cultivation, fishing and boat travel are closely tied to the seasons.
Use this location map to explore the area and plan onward journeys. It is a general orientation map, not an official district-boundary map.
A short history of Sunamganj
Sunamganj became a district on 1 March 1984. Its older settlements, religious sites and former zamindar houses hold different strands of local history. Visitors interested in heritage can combine the town’s cultural landmarks with a separate rural excursion. Many historic buildings have local access arrangements, so check before travelling specifically to see one.

The mystic poet Hason Raja is closely associated with Sunamganj. His home and legacy help visitors understand a musical tradition that explores identity, devotion and the human condition.
Shah Abdul Karim and Radharaman
Dirai is associated with Baul singer Shah Abdul Karim, while Jagannathpur has connections with Radharaman Dutta. Their songs remain an important part of the district’s contribution to Bengali and Sylheti cultural life.
Life around the haor
Boat journeys, seasonal farming and fishing communities shape everyday experience. Local songs and gatherings carry stories of land, water and belonging. Ask before photographing people, and support community businesses where possible.

Local economy and everyday life
Rice farming, fisheries and related trade underpin much of the district’s rural economy. Tourism adds work for boat operators, guides, accommodation providers and food businesses. The changing water level is not simply a scenic feature: it affects livelihoods, access and the timing of work. A thoughtful visitor keeps those realities in mind.

When to visit
Choose your season around your interests. Wetter months bring the open-water landscape associated with haor boating; cooler, drier months offer a different view of wetlands and rural life.
