Bholaganj Sada Pathor

Bholaganj Sada Pathor is a famous tourist destination in Bangladesh, located in the Companiganj Upazila of the Sylhet District. Known as the “White Stone Wonderland,” it sits right on the border with India’s Meghalaya state, where the crystal-clear Dhalai River enters Bangladesh.

Key Highlights

  • Natural Aesthetics: The spot features thousands of smooth, white stones washed down from the Cherrapunji hills of India by heavy water currents.
  • Scenic Backdrop: Visitors are treated to panoramic views of towering, lush green Indian mountains and drifting clouds.
  • Dhalai River: The river is famous for its vibrant, cool, and transparent water, making it a hotspot for swimming and boating.

How to Get There from Sylhet City

Sada Pathor is roughly 33 to 35 kilometres north of Sylhet city. The journey typically takes around 1 to 1.5 hours via the Sylhet-Companiganj-Bholaganj highway.

Sylhet to Companiganj (Tuker Bazar):

  • Local Bus: Take a bus from the Ambarkhana Point in Sylhet heading to Companiganj. Fares are around 50–70 BDT per person.
  • CNG Auto-rickshaw: You can reserve a full CNG for the day for about 1,000–1,500 BDT.
  • Private Car/Microbus: Can be rented from Sylhet for a hassle-free day trip, costing around 2,500–3,000 BDT.

Tuker Bazar / Bholaganj Ghat to Sada Pathor:

  • Once you reach the Bholaganj ghat (boat terminal), you must rent an engine boat to reach the actual “Zero Point” white stone area.
  • A boat typically costs around 800 BDT for a round-trip and can carry up to 8 people.

Best Time to Visit

  • Monsoon Season (May to October): This is the ultimate time to visit. The river currents are strong, the water is at its clearest, the waterfalls on the distant Indian hills are fully active, and the surrounding scenery is lush green.
  • Winter Season: The water flow recedes significantly, revealing vast fields of white stones. While it is less dramatic, the water remains calm and clear.

Crucial Travel Tips

  • Safety in the Water: The river current can be incredibly strong, especially during the monsoons. The underwater rocks are very slippery. Exercise extreme caution while swimming and avoid going too close to the strong currents at the mouth of the border.
  • Border Restrictions: This is an international border zone. Do not attempt to cross the designated fencing or flags into Indian territory.
  • Accommodation: There are minimal high-end accommodation options in Bholaganj, though a couple of local resorts exist. It is highly recommended to do a day trip and stay overnight at a hotel in Sylhet city.
  • Food: Basic local eateries are available at Bholaganj Bazar, but it is wise to eat a heavy breakfast in Sylhet and pack your own snacks and bottled water.
  • Environmental Note: Widespread environmental changes and stone-looting operations have occasionally impacted the stone distribution at the site. However, the scenic river and mountain views continue to draw thousands of tourists weekly.
