GREATER SYLHET · DISTRICT GUIDE

River valleys, sacred places and a city with worldwide connections

Sylhet district brings together the region’s main city, the Surma riverside, working tea estates and the border landscapes around Jaflong and Jaintapur. It is one of the four districts of Sylhet Division in northeastern Bangladesh. For many visitors, it is both an arrival point and the place where family, faith and memories of home meet.

Sylhet city is the district headquarters and the administrative centre of the division. The district extends well beyond the city: rural settlements, river valleys and hill-edge communities all form part of its identity. “Sylhet” is often used for the whole region, but this guide covers the district specifically; Sreemangal, for example, belongs to Moulvibazar district.

Where is Sylhet? Geography and map

The district borders Meghalaya to the north and Assam to the east, with Moulvibazar to the south and Sunamganj and Habiganj to the west. The Surma and Kushiyara are central to the region’s river landscape. Lowland farmland contrasts with the hill country near the international border. Rain and changing river levels can affect both everyday journeys and sightseeing routes.

A short history of Sylhet

Sylhet’s earlier history is associated with Srihatta, the Surma valley and the kingdoms of Gour and Jaintia. The shrines of Hazrat Shah Jalal (R) and Hazrat Shah Paran (R) remain important religious landmarks. Jaintapur’s surviving historic sites offer another perspective on the district’s past. The 1947 referendum and partition changed the wider region’s borders, while the emergence of Bangladesh in 1971 shaped its modern national identity.

Cultural heritage of Sylhet

01

Faith and shared heritage

Shrines, mosques, temples and local festivals form part of the district’s cultural life. Visitors should follow the customs of each place, dress respectfully and ask before taking photographs inside religious sites.

02

Sylheti and Nagri

Sylheti is widely used in everyday conversation, alongside Bangla in education and public life. The historic Sylheti Nagri script is a distinctive part of the region’s literary heritage. Explore our Nagri guide to learn more about its letters and use.

03

Home and the diaspora

Family connections with the United Kingdom and other countries are an important part of contemporary Sylheti life. Returning visitors often combine sightseeing with time in ancestral villages. Food traditions, including shatkora dishes and fish-based meals, help carry those connections across generations.

For the wider regional story, read About Sylhet and our guide to Sylheti Nagri.

Local economy and everyday life

The city supports education, healthcare, retail and visitor services, while rural livelihoods include agriculture, fishing and tea cultivation. Overseas family connections also influence local business and housing. Tea estates are workplaces as well as attractive scenery: do not assume that every estate allows visitors to walk freely through its grounds.

Getting to Sylhet

Osmani International Airport serves the Sylhet area. Visitors can also compare rail and coach journeys from elsewhere in Bangladesh. Choose a city base for restaurants and shorter urban journeys, and plan rural excursions separately. An arranged car and driver can be useful for a full day out; confirm the destination, waiting time and return fare in advance.

When to visit

For a first visit with several outdoor stops, the cooler, generally drier months are often easier to plan around. Wetter months change the river and forest scenery but can bring flooding and access restrictions. Check local conditions rather than assuming that every attraction operates throughout the year.

Keep natural places free of litter, follow official restrictions and ask before photographing people or entering residential areas. For regional visitor essentials, see our practical travel information.
