Hakaluki Haor: Location, Routes, Seasons & Visitor Guide

Hakaluki Haor wetland landscape in Greater Sylhet

Hakaluki Haor is a large freshwater wetland shared by Sylhet and Moulvibazar in north-eastern Bangladesh. It offers two different visitor experiences: wide water views during the wet season and birdwatching around its remaining water bodies in winter. The best plan starts with choosing an access point and deciding what you want to see.

This guide explains routes from Sylhet and Moulvibazar, seasonal differences and questions to ask before arranging a boat. For a wider itinerary, see our Moulvibazar attractions guide.

Where is Hakaluki Haor?

Hakaluki stretches across parts of Sylhet and Moulvibazar districts. It is not a single lakeside gate with one standard sightseeing circuit. Different access points lead to different views, road journeys and boat arrangements, so agree a specific destination before leaving.

A haor is a wetland basin whose appearance changes with the seasons. During wetter months, adjoining water bodies and flooded areas can form a broad expanse of water. As water recedes, the landscape becomes a mixture of beels, land, cultivation and local activity. A photograph from one season may look different from your visit.

How to get to Hakaluki Haor from Sylhet

Sylhet District Administration describes a route through Fenchuganj, followed by local transport towards Ghilachara Zero Point. Confirm the current road approach and where to meet a boat operator if a boat trip is part of the plan.

Give your driver the access-point name rather than asking only for Hakaluki Haor. Ask whether the price includes waiting and the return journey. Our Sylhet bus stand guide explains why the departure point should be checked for each service.

From Moulvibazar, Barlekha or Kulaura

Moulvibazar District Administration describes access through Barlekha and onwards by CNG autorickshaw to the haor edge at Halla. Its guide also identifies connections through Kulaura and the Juri area. Choose an approach that fits your accommodation and intended activity.

If arriving by train at Kulaura, arrange the onward road connection separately. Check the train’s stopping pattern through the official railway booking channel and leave time between arrival and a boat booking. A rail ticket does not include transport to the water.

Best time to visit: boating or birdwatching?

Wet-season water scenery

The attraction is the broad water landscape, but boat routes depend on water levels and weather. Heavy rain or storms can make an outing unsuitable. Keep bookings flexible enough to postpone and check conditions close to departure.

Winter birdwatching

Government visitor information highlights migratory birds around the beels in winter. Bring binoculars, ask about suitable observation points and keep noise low. Sightings depend on season, habitat and disturbance; a particular species cannot be guaranteed.

Arranging a Hakaluki Haor boat trip

Agree the boarding point, route, duration, passenger capacity and total charge before boarding. Confirm the return point, any included stops and the plan if the weather changes. Ask for suitable life jackets for every passenger, including children.

Important planning tip: The district visitor guide warns that storms can make boat travel dangerous and that mobile coverage can be weak in some areas. Share your route with someone ashore, carry essential contacts offline and follow local instructions.

Costs and a practical day-trip plan

There is no single verified package price for the whole haor in this guide. Budget separately for road transport, an optional boat, a guide, food and agreed local charges. Confirm a clear total, waiting time and return arrangements before paying.

  1. Choose shoreline scenery, birdwatching or a permitted boat trip.
  2. Agree the access point and a reliable return journey.
  3. Check weather, water conditions and any local restrictions.
  4. Allow time for observation, food and the road journey back.

Hakaluki and Madhabkunda Waterfall can feature in a wider Moulvibazar itinerary, but they have separate access requirements. Ask about the complete route before combining them in one day.

Responsible wetland visiting

Keep away from nesting or resting birds, avoid loud music and take rubbish away. Respect fishing gear, crops and private land. Ask before photographing people or entering settlements. Use an experienced local operator who understands the route and restrictions.
