Nabiganj (নবীগঞ্জ) is a town and upazila in Habiganj District, within Bangladesh’s Sylhet Division. Also written Nobigonj, it is a useful place to understand when planning a family visit, a local appointment or a journey through the Habiganj side of Greater Sylhet.
This guide explains where Nabiganj is, the road approach via Aushkandi, connections from Habiganj and Shaistaganj, and the places associated with the wider upazila—including Bibiyana Gas Field and the Imam and Bawani tea estates.
Where is Nabiganj?
Nabiganj is part of Habiganj District, rather than Sylhet District. “Sylhet” in a broad regional description can mean the division, so include Nabiganj, Habiganj when searching maps or arranging transport. The town centre and a destination elsewhere in the upazila may need different drop-off points.
Keep the Bangla spelling নবীগঞ্জ with your travel details. A village name, union name and local contact number are more helpful to a driver than the upazila name alone.
How to get to Nabiganj
From Dhaka or Sylhet via Aushkandi
The upazila’s published transport guidance describes travelling along the Dhaka–Sylhet highway to Aushkandi, near Kibria Chattar, then taking the road west towards Nabiganj. It gives the local section as approximately 14 km. This is an orientation figure, not a guaranteed journey distance from every highway stop to every village.
Before booking, ask whether the service goes into Nabiganj town or leaves passengers at Aushkandi for a separate transfer. Confirm the exact stopping point and arrange the last part of the journey, particularly if arriving with children, luggage or late in the day.
From Habiganj town
The same government guide places Nabiganj approximately 27 km from Habiganj. Confirm your pickup, local road conditions and final drop-off with the driver. Allow extra time for a village destination beyond the town centre.
By train via Shaistaganj
The official guidance describes a rail approach through Shaistaganj railway station, followed by road travel via Habiganj to Nabiganj. Check that your chosen train actually stops at Shaistaganj and arrange the onward transfer before buying tickets. Use Bangladesh Railway’s official ticket service for the available trains and travel date.
For departures from Sylhet city, our Sylhet bus stand guide helps you distinguish the main terminals and counters. Ask the operator about your specific destination rather than assuming every Habiganj-bound service uses the same stop.
Places associated with Nabiganj
Bibiyana Gas Field
Bibiyana Gas Field is in Nabiganj, Habiganj. Operator Chevron identifies it as Bangladesh’s largest operating gas field and records first production in March 2007. It is an important part of the area’s industrial identity.
This is a working energy facility with controlled access. The photograph on this page documents the site in 2018; it does not indicate that tours or casual entry are available. Do not plan a sightseeing stop inside the facility without specific authorisation from the operator.
Imam and Bawani tea estates
The upazila’s places-of-interest page identifies Imam and Bawani as tea gardens in Nabiganj. Government land records also list both estates in the upazila. Confirm the correct entrance and permission with estate management before including either in your itinerary.
Tea estates are workplaces and homes as well as landscapes. Stay on permitted paths, avoid entering workers’ homes or factory areas, and ask before taking portraits. If access has not been arranged, choose another stop rather than arriving expecting a public park.
Inatganj and local visits
Inatganj is another place name you may encounter when researching the wider Nabiganj area and Bibiyana. A visit to the town centre, a family home and an industrial address are different journeys: confirm the precise destination with your host before choosing a route.
A practical Nabiganj visit plan
- Morning: travel to your main destination and complete any appointment or family visit first.
- Afternoon: add a nearby stop only if its location and access are confirmed. Keep estate visits pre-arranged.
- Return: allow time for the local connection to the highway or railway station, with a buffer before an onward departure.
For a wider Habiganj itinerary, read our Madhabpur guide. If your journey continues towards Sunamganj, the Jagannathpur guide explains its road approaches. Treat each as a separate route-planning decision rather than trying to combine every destination into one day.
Local services and accommodation
Use the official Nabiganj Upazila portal for department links and public notices, and the municipality’s contact page for municipal enquiries. Check office hours and the documents needed directly with the relevant department before travelling.
For an overnight visit, confirm the property’s exact location, room facilities, check-in arrangements and total price directly. Choose a base around your actual commitments and transport connections. For a rural destination, ask whether the final approach is suitable for your vehicle after rain.
Nabiganj FAQs
Which district is Nabiganj in?
Nabiganj is in Habiganj District, within Sylhet Division in Bangladesh.
Are Nabiganj and Nobigonj the same place?
Both spellings are used for নবীগঞ্জ. Add “Habiganj” and the exact village or town destination when searching or booking transport.
How do I reach Nabiganj from the Dhaka–Sylhet highway?
The government route guide describes a connection at Aushkandi near Kibria Chattar, followed by the road towards Nabiganj. Confirm whether your operator provides a town drop-off or only a highway stop.
Can I visit Bibiyana Gas Field as a tourist?
Do not assume public entry. It is an operating industrial facility; any visit requires the relevant authorisation.

Check with the estate first. A place appearing in a local guide does not establish opening hours or permission to enter private working grounds.
