Madhabkunda Waterfall is a forest-framed waterfall in Barlekha, Moulvibazar, within the wider Sylhet division. Also written Madhobkundo or Madhabkund, it is one of Bangladesh’s best-known waterfall destinations. The visit combines a walk through Madhabkunda Eco Park with views of water dropping over a steep, green hillside.

This guide explains where Madhabkunda is, how to arrange the journey, what to expect on arrival and which details to check before setting off. For a wider itinerary, see our Moulvibazar attractions guide.

Where is Madhabkunda Waterfall?

The waterfall is in the Barlekha area of Moulvibazar district. It is often included in Sylhet travel plans, but it is not a city-centre attraction in Sylhet. Allow for a separate road journey rather than treating it as a quick stop between attractions around Sylhet city.

Madhabkunda Waterfall and Madhabpur Lake are different destinations. Madhabpur Lake is in Kamalganj, while Madhabkunda is in Barlekha. Use the full destination name when agreeing a route with a driver or booking accommodation.

How to get to Madhabkunda Waterfall

From Moulvibazar

Official tourism directions describe travelling towards Barlekha and turning off at Kathaltali market before reaching Barlekha town. Local CNG autorickshaws provide the onward connection towards Madhabkunda. Published official descriptions give different distances for this final section, so confirm the pickup point and route locally.

From Sylhet city or Sreemangal

Arrange a car or suitable local transport for the journey to the park, with the return trip agreed in advance. Ask the driver for a realistic estimate based on your starting point and road conditions. A private vehicle can make the day easier for families, but check the total price, waiting time and parking arrangements before accepting a quote.

Arriving by train

If your wider journey uses rail, check the most suitable station and onward road connection before buying a ticket. A train journey to Sylhet does not take you directly to the waterfall. Our Sylhet Railway Station guide explains official booking channels and planning considerations for visitors travelling through the city.

The eco-park walk and what to expect

A government visitor description places the waterfall around half a kilometre on foot from the eco-park’s main gate. Treat this as an approximate guide rather than a guaranteed accessible route. Paths can be damp or uneven, and conditions may change after rain.

Wear shoes with good grip and take time to enjoy the wooded setting as well as the waterfall itself. If someone in your group has limited mobility, check the current walking surface, steps and distance with park staff before entering. Bring drinking water and avoid carrying more than you can comfortably manage.

Important visiting tip: Enjoy the waterfall from permitted viewpoints. Do not enter the plunge pool, climb wet rocks or follow informal paths into restricted areas. Follow park staff and local authority instructions even if other visitors ignore them.

When is the best time to visit?

Choose your date around weather, walking conditions and your group’s comfort. Rain can change both the appearance of a waterfall and the condition of its approach paths. A dramatic photograph is not a reason to travel during unsafe weather or ignore access restrictions.

Check the forecast shortly before leaving and ask locally about recent heavy rain. For a relaxed outing, start with enough daylight for the road journey, the walk, a meal and the return trip. Avoid a timetable that depends on reaching every stop at an exact minute.

Entry fee, opening hours and trip budget

Confirm the current entry fee and opening arrangements with the park or local authorities before travelling. We have not verified a current official tariff, so older prices circulating online should not be treated as a guaranteed charge.

Budget separately for return transport, park entry, parking where applicable, food and any agreed guide services. Ask whether a vehicle quote includes waiting and your final drop-off. Carry a practical amount of cash for smaller local payments and keep valuables secure.

A simple Madhabkunda day-trip plan

  1. Before departure: check weather, park access and the return transport arrangement.
  2. On arrival: confirm the permitted route, current charges and closing time.
  3. At the park: allow an unhurried walk and time at the authorised viewing areas.
  4. Before returning: take a meal break and leave sufficient daylight for onward travel.

If you want to add tea-country sightseeing, plan it around travel time rather than proximity on a map. Sreemangal and the broader Moulvibazar area offer other experiences, but a single waterfall outing does not need several extra destinations to be worthwhile.

Respect the landscape and local communities

The wider area includes Khasi communities and places of religious significance. Ask before photographing people, entering gardens or visiting community spaces. Keep noise low, take rubbish away and leave plants and rocks undisturbed. A local community is a lived-in place, rather than an attraction with unrestricted access.
