GREATER SYLHET · DISTRICT GUIDE
Tea hills, forest paths and the stories of the Khowai valley
Habiganj district lies in the southwestern part of Sylhet Division. Its landscape ranges from haor wetlands and agricultural plains to tea-covered hills and forest areas near the border with Tripura. Habiganj town, the district headquarters, sits beside the Khowai River. The district offers a quieter way to discover Greater Sylhet, with nature, religious heritage and village life all close to the story.
Habiganj district at a glance
*Population is the district-wide count in the BBS Population and Housing Census 2022 preliminary report, not a current estimate or town population. Later reports may revise figures. Area figures follow the district government profile; published administrative and statistical areas can differ.
Habiganj is one of the four districts that make up today’s Sylhet Division. Its town and its wider district should not be confused: forest destinations, tea estates and haor settlements can be a considerable journey from the town centre. The district was upgraded to district status in 1984, having previously formed part of the wider Sylhet administrative region.

Where is Habiganj? Geography and map
Sunamganj and Sylhet lie to the north, Moulvibazar to the east, Tripura in India to the south, and Kishoreganj and Brahmanbaria to the west. Rivers including the Khowai, Kushiyara and Sutang shape the lowlands. The northern wetland areas and southern forested hills provide quite different experiences, so choose your base around the places you want to explore.

A short history of Habiganj
The district administration links the town’s name to a market established on the Khowai by Syed Habib Ullah. Its heritage includes the historic Shankarpasha Shahi Mosque, Bithangal Akhra in Baniachong and sites associated with the spiritual history of Taraf. These places are more than stops on a sightseeing route: they remain connected with worship, local memory and community life.

Getting to Habiganj
Road journeys link Habiganj with the Dhaka–Sylhet corridor. Shayestaganj is a useful rail connection for the district; confirm the relevant service and onward transport before booking. If arriving through Sylhet’s airport, arrange the transfer to your actual destination, rather than assuming all Habiganj locations are close to the town. Forest trips may need an early start and a separate vehicle.
When to visit
Drier conditions generally make forest walks and road excursions easier. Wetland scenery changes with the rain, but heavy rainfall can affect roads, trails and boat travel. Wear suitable footwear for forest outings, follow local guides and leave enough daylight for the return journey.
Keep natural places free of litter, follow official restrictions and ask before photographing people or entering residential areas. For regional visitor essentials, see our practical travel information.
