Food prices escalation in Ramadan
Ramadan – a holy month for every Muslims. As we another Ramadan, everyone is hoping to have the prices of kitchen market to be within the affordability for the masses.
Notwithstanding the assurances given by traders at different meetings with the ministry of commerce and the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) for keeping prices of essentials stable during the month of Ramadan, the early signs are rather alarming.
The week before the month of Ramadan, the kitchen market has already become jittery. A number of essentials most in demand during the month has registered price rise in defiance of logic. For example, onions — both local and imported varieties — which only two weeks ago were priced at Tk 32-35 and Tk 28-30 have suddenly experienced skyrocketing of price of the item up to Tk 48 or 42 respectively. Within just a week onions have become dearer by over 31 and 51 per cent for the two varieties, according to the Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB).
